English Language Learning Beyond Language asserts that existing ESL/EAL education models fail to fully recognize how multilingual learners construct academic understanding. The monograph argues that these learners use interconnected linguistic, cultural, and multimodal resources distributed across families, classrooms, communities, and institutions. It draws on research in heritage language maintenance, multilingual immigrant learners, sociocultural theory, translanguaging, multimodality, and critical language policy to show that current approaches systematically underestimate multilingual learners’ knowledge by relying on narrow, monolingual evidence. The central argument is that a broader, more integrated approach is necessary to realize their academic potential.
Through a comprehensive analysis of global English, assessment systems, literacy practices, and institutional dynamics, the book reveals how multilingual learners are often disadvantaged. In response, it introduces the Parent–School Collaborative Framework for Multilingual Meaning-Making, an innovative systemic model that fosters more meaningful learning by ensuring academic understanding is supported and legitimized throughout educational environments. This framework offers clear benefits: it enables more equitable assessment, broadens access to academic legitimacy, and empowers schools to support multilingual learners’ long-term achievement. By reframing English language learning as a process of multilingual, multimodal meaning-making, this monograph provides practical strategies that benefit researchers, policymakers, educators, and diverse student communities worldwide.
